Strategies
Some strategies:
- Don't guess. All the placements should be backed by a logical reduction.
- Ambiguity simply means working a different area of the puzzle.
- Change between working vertically and horizontally; Usually, change in one dimension will open up opportunities for the other.
- Prioritize completing lines on the edges, they're very useful since the grid can be considered as surrounded by ❌ tiles.
- Look for long lines, big numbers usually means you can span the entire grid and help you block out a large areas 🟦 into smaller, more manageable areas.
- The reverse is also true; very small numbers can be used as well to block out ❌ areas
- It's very important to know where tiles can't go.
- A useful method to fill out tiles is to look at the number and count out tiles that MUST exist in either direction.
Example
Starting from this:
| 5 | ❌ | ❌ | ❌ |
|---|
Count from the left:
| 5 | ❌ | ❌ | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | ❌ |
|---|
and count from the right
| 5 | ❌ | ❌ | 5 | 4 | 3 | 2 | 1 | ❌ |
|---|
Fill out tiles for everything that overlaps (3, 4 5)
| 5 | ❌ | ❌ | 🟦 | 🟦 | 🟦 | ❌ |
|---|
Keep the other tiles empty; they represent unknowns of where the tiles could be. ❌ should only be used when we're certain that a tile couldn't exist there.
